10 Of the Best Sufi Songs of Bollywood

Sufi music is the devotional music of the Sufis, inspired by the works of Sufi poets, like Rumi, Hafiz, Bulleh Shah, Amir Khusrow and Khwaja Ghulam Farid.

Abida Parveen, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,  Sanam Marvi, Asrar Shah are Pakistan based singers who are some of the foremost exponents of Sufi music.

In our Bollywood, we have had several compositions which draw inspiration from the Sufi genre of music.

Kun Faya Kun : Rockstar

An amazing composition, sung by A.R. Rahman, Javed Ali and Mohit Chauhan, this song was one of the best songs of the year it was released in. It was sung by the Rockstar Jordan when he was struggling. The song captures the emotions and feelings when he was at his lowest moments at the Nizamuddin Dargah.

Maula Mere Maula – Anwar

This is a beautiful number from the movie ‘Anwar’. Sung by Roop Kumar Rathod, this is one song which we can listen on a never-ending loop.

Arziyan – Delhi 6

This is one  superb song  from 2009 movie ‘Delhi 6’. A movie that by its very name evokes the charm of Old Dilli will be incomplete without tracks typical of the Jama Masjid-Nizamuddin Dargah aura. Arziyan has charming panoramic shots of Old Delhi. Singers Javed Ali and Kailash Kher add the the magic of Chandni Chowk into this A.R. Rahman melody.

Tere Bin Nahin Jeena Mar Jaana Dholna – Kachhe Dhaage

Soulful words  with music that became extremely popular, this is one of the best from the musical genius, Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s musical genius. This one is a moving song, it portrays the agony of separation of lovers, beautifully.

Piya Haji Ali- Fiza

Sung by A.R. Rahman, Kadar Ghulam Mustafa, Murtaza Ghulam Mustafa and Srinivas this is one of the most authentic sounding Sufi songs. Written by Shaukat Ali in the praise of Syed Peer Haji Ali Bukhari is a soulful rendition.

Ya Rabba – Salaam-e-Ishq

Another soul stirring song by Kailash Kher leaves you speechless and yearning for more. With music and lyrics by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Sameer, ‘Ya Rabba’ nicely infuses Sufi strains with blues.

Khwaja Mere Khwaja – Jodhaa Akbar

Sung in the praise of Moin-ud-din Chishti, this song is written by Javed Akhtar and sung by A.R. Rahman, Javed Ali and Mohammad Aslam. Brilliance of this song lies not only in its lyrics but also the way it is sung.

Tu Jaane Na – Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani

This is a poignant track combining Sufi with romance. The three versions of this song are sung by Kailash Kher, Atif Aslam and Soham Chakraborty respectively.

Piya Milenge – Ranjhanaa

This is one heart touching track from  A R Rahman sung by Sukhwinder Singh & KMMC Sufi Ensemble. It is about a heart broken lover who waits for his love to come back to him.

Saaiyaan – Heroine

Sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, with music by Salim-Sulaiman, this song  infuses the figure of the lover with the higher powers beautifully.
