Neeraj Ghaywan’s directorial debut, ‘Masaan’, which means a crematorium in Hindi is released today. The film won two awards at 68th Festival De Cannes.
Masaan shows the darker side of Indian society through the lives of two women. It is a realistic portrayal of the hypocritical society that we live in, which looks at premarital sex between two adults as a taboo, but doesn’t hesitate exploiting it in every other way.
On one hand, there is Devi, played by Richa Chadha trapped in a MMS scandal by corrupt police officials and then there’s Shaalu played by Shweta Tripathi, who falls in love with a man from a lower caste and burns dead bodies for a living.
Neeraj has showcased the lives of these young women trapped in social prejudice and small town mentality with utmost realism.
The film, produced by Drishyam Films, Phantom Films, Macassar Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, stars Sanjay Mishra and Richa Chaddha in the lead along with newcomers Shweta and Vicky Kaushal.
“Masaan” is coming at a theater near you on July 24.
