40 Years of Sholay

Ramesh Sippy’s epic action-thriller, Sholay, changed the face of Hindi cinema. It was released on August 15th, 1975 and that’s 40 years ago. This multi starrer which had some of the biggest stars Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra along with Sanjeev Kumar, Amjad Khan, Hema Malini and Jaya Bachchan has achieved the status of a cult movie.

The film had tanked on its initial release, but went on to become a blockbuster after it was withdrawn and re-released a few weeks later. From the iconic characters like Gabbar Singh to Jai-Veeru’s tale of friendship, from subtle love story to powerful dialogues, Sholay is a perfect pot-boiler masala. Sholay has given several trends  over the last four decades, which has been repeated by generations of filmmakers. No wonder, it is a cult movie.
